The Paranormal: What is it really?

We call it paranormal…but what is it really?

I have had people ask me this question time and time again and I have to admit, I find it difficult to answer. It’s easy to fall back on the standard definition of the word…some thing or event that is above or beyond normal, but that simply does not cut it and explains nothing. There are so many sub categories under the umbrella of paranormal, that to just ask what the paranormal is can be impossible to answer. Are you asking about ghosts, hauntings, cryptids, aliens, psychic abilities, NDE’s…what? There is no one way to explain a thing that is fundamentally unexplainable.

I have been immersed in the world of the mysterious, ghostly, unknown and paranormal for as long as I can remember. As a child it was books and more books of haunting tales and then came the movies in my teen years and all through these years I had experienced things I absolutely knew were not what the general public thought of as normal. As a result, a lot of what I experienced I kept to myself knowing it would not be taken seriously. As I grew into adulthood the experiences continued as did the reading and such until finally in 2009 I decided to get serious about paranormal research after investigating a friend’s apartment that was extremely active with para events. The place was amazing and it sealed my future as a researcher and investigator.

That brings us back to the question, what is the paranormal really? Well, it’s a matter of perspective. People have been researching the paranormal since time immemorial and we are no closer today to a solid answer. Whether you are using a notebook and pencil and possibly a voice recorder or a Mr. or Mrs. Gadget who goes in with all the latest ghost hunting tools, you are no closer to discovering what people have been searching for since forever. It boils down to this: if you are a believer in the paranormal and know without a doubt that it is real, then it is normal but just not satisfactorily explained but if you are a non believer then nothing anyone tells or shows you will ever convince you of the reality of paranormal experiences or events. It’s all about your perspective.

We really know nothing concrete about the why and how of it all, only that these things happen and have been happening for eons. Since we can’t seem to come up with anything that describes the paranormal conclusively then I say we are not supposed to know. If we really knew what the dynamics of various forms of “paranormal” were, then there would be no need for or desire to research it. Paranormal, supernatural, anomalous, fringe and other words are just poor blanket terms for things we really don’t understand and probably never will…at least not in this lifetime. The best we can do is to just keep forging ahead and learning as much as possible about what we know to be true but have no sure fire way of explaining.

Update and Some Paranormalogistically Related Thoughts

It has been a while since I actually wrote anything for this blog except for reposting a few excellent pieces from fellow bloggers. However, I have had some things rolling around in my head for a while and if I don’t get some of it out, my head may explode. My other life…maintaining a country property, flower and vegetable gardens, and some chronic health conditions, have kept me continuously fatigued and in no way eager to do any kind of writing. I do have a few things I’m working on and will post those here when they are ready. I do expect to keep on reblogging interesting and well-written articles. I do this daily in other social media outlets and see no reason not to share what I can here as well. I entirely believe in spreading the word and as it goes, I read voraciously every time I get a break. In fact, I escape into the paranormal, universal and quantum sciences as a way to unwind, relax and enjoy myself and as a reward for working through another tiring and painful day. A couple of things I want to say here have just been bugging me for a while and are not so much rants as a heads up. So here goes.

PhilosophersDesk

Do NOT buy used paranormal investigation equipment. I don’t care if you know the people who are selling it and trust them completely. Used equipment has been over used, abused, hooked, unhooked and put away wet time after time. By the time you get this stuff you can look forward to a dvr hard drive crash, batteries that won’t hold a charge, and others errors and break downs due to the rough road these electronics have already traveled. You might have scored an incredible deal on that fully loaded dvr but let a hard drive go down or something fry the whole damn thing and you have the expense of fixing it at a ridiculous fee and it will end up costing as much or more as a new unit would have. Buy it new with a warranty and if it fails then you might have some way to get it fixed without it killing your wallet. In the mean time, take care of what you have folks. This stuff doesn’t come cheap and it really isn’t meant for the uses and reuses we put it through, so be gentle with your “ghost hunting” gadgets.

I do think I’m just about done using the word “afterlife”. I believe I’ll start going with “nextlife”. The word afterlife has been so over said and prostituted by the news media, television and internet and delcared gazillions of times by paranormal investigators, including myself. The word itself makes no real sense to those of us who believe in life after physical bodily death…and parallel dimensions, alternate timelines and multiple universes. It indicates that the afterlife is later in time, whereas, the nextlife indicates another life next to this one, anywhere in time and immediately adjacent to or beside this physical life. I mean to say that this life and the next life and the previous life and on and on…are all next to each other rather than one after another. Maybe the word has just grated on me long enough just like the above detested “ghost hunter” reference.

Spelling. I recently received a request on a favorite social media website and when I went to check their profile, I found a two line description with four spelling errors. I did not scroll down to look at anything else, I just left. This particular group didn’t impress me as being the brightest lightbulbs in the package. Now hey…I’ll like just about any para page you can throw at me but seriously. There really is no excuse for this laziness in communication. I’ve seen this sloppy spelling and grammar increase a great deal recently and I just don’t understand why. I know I take creative license a lot with punctuation, especially commas, but it doesn’t look like a first grader wrote it either. So if you are not 100 percent sure how to spell something, look it up. Same goes for proof reading your work before you put it out there. Find the typos and fix them. If you want to be taken seriously at the outset, you cannot write that you are “A paranormul teem with grate skil for finding yor gosts and helping yor famly. We do no chagre for are survises we are hear to help yoo.” Ok…that may be a bit over the top but not by much from what I’ve seen around the net lately. Have some respect for yourselves folks, educate your mind. If you ever find a misspelled word or typographical error in my work, please let me know. Poetry doesn’t count 😉

So… since it seems that I am getting a whole lot more reading done than writing, I would love it if you posted a link to your paranormalogistically related blog or website in the comment section below. I will get to it eventually and very often I find something I will repost all over the place so bring it on. You can find me on the social media links to the right of this post, and there you’ll find tons of articles and blog posts that you won’t find here. And if you would like to add to the thoughts above please feel free to say what’s on your mind.

A Mental Challenge – Behavior & Perception

I  watch several criminology shows and some of the paranormal shows and movies now and then. “Getting into” the criminology shows sparked an interest in behavioral science and I’ve begun to dig deeper into the research. I know, it’s a part of psychology…but then again I’ve been researching quantum mechanics in relation to the paranormal. All related or interelated concepts.

When a paranormal investigator asks questions of unseen presences, when he/she asks who, what, where, when and why it is because they want to know the psychology of that presence. And they are generally attempting this without the use of all their senses. You rarely see the entity or feel it’s touch or even hear it at the time of questioning, but you just know it is there. You are picking up on some part of the psychology of that presence. When you lose one or more of your five physical senses then the others become more sensitive, including your sixth sense, and these levels of inner senses and instinct work harder to fill in the missing pieces.

Back to the tv shows.

Most of the time when one of these shows is recording on the DVR, I will have the volume muted and may be off in a daze thinking about something. But occasionally I have found myself watching the show muted only to watch it later with the sound and find that my perceptions and ideas were very close regarding what I believed to be happening in the show and what did actually happen.

Take any show that you watch with regularity, where you know the characters and their personalities and body language then apply this to new characters. Turn the sound off and watch the body language carefully. (You will pick up words anyway if you can read lips). See if you can work out what is going on based on what you can see only.

A bigger challenge lies in just how real it is…try this with things like the news or the weather channel shows, history and documentaries, shows where you don’t know the ‘history’ of the people involved…it’s all fair game in the quest to know why we behave the way we do.

Now watch it again with the volume. How close did you come? How close were your perceptions to what happened in the script and plot of the show?

You will get better at perceiving human psychology and behavior the more you practice this. This then makes you more empathic and sensitive to the people and situations around you all the time. Really look and listen to what is going on in your world. Use all of your senses and open your awareness to the psychology and behavior of others.

You will discover we really are not all that different from one another.

“If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear to man as it is, infinite.” ~ William Blake

Paranormal Investigators- Be aware of your mental state

It is another hot, humid day here in the northeast and temps will reach into the low 90’s and feel like the low 100’s. As it is, this aggravation will most likely make this post a bit fired up. I don’t mind hot, I don’t like humid…and we need rain, yesterday. So, I know I am not the only one who sees some of this crap go on and after something irritates me for long enough, I finally say something.

For the last several years I have been reading the writings of my friends and fellow paranormal investigators and have found some highly curious and intelligent people. People whom I gladly subscribe to because I know I’m going to find interesting ideas, theories and even some laughs.  Some of these people seem to have become targets for haters: people who take a crack at anything posted whether it be blogs, pics, video, EVP…in short, potential paranormal evidence.

All I can say to these haters is I think your time would be better spent i-n-v-e-s-t-i-g-a-t-i-n-g and r-e-s-e-a-r-c-h-i-n-g rather than sitting at your computer shooting darts at somebody.  I realize to put your words, your thoughts, your evidence- on the internet, is to open yourself to criticism and I have no problem with it provided the critic has a little respect. If you must be critical of another investigator’s evidence, do so politely and with tact, please do not be rude or hateful.  We should be learning together not having turf or gang wars.

For you serious investigators and empathic souls out there, watch your mental state!  There is sometimes quite enough psychic overload in the field we have chosen without wasting energy on un-called for drama.  The worst thing you can do is respond to people who seem to be out to get you. It’s like rewarding a disobedient child, you give them permission to do it again because they know it will get them attention.  Don’t worry about these kind of people ruining your reputation, your morals and intelligence will shine through and so will their lack of it.

As we all know, opinions are like a#%holes, we all have one.  And I won’t dismiss anyone’s opinion even if it comes from an a#%hole, but please people, don’t tolerate abuse. We are here to teach and to support one another, not to thrash and bash. The internet is sick with “ghost hunters” and you must use your common sense and don’t respond to anger with anger.  Ignore them or delete them but don’t encourage them.

If you are serious about investigating the paranormal and do more than sit on your ass and blaze people, I admire you!  We can learn from eachother and keep our mental state as clear as possible of negative energy.  I did not write this post to target any one person or persons…you know who you are.

Just sayin’.

What Was Your First Paranormal Experience?

Here it is.  I am curious to know what happened to you that created such a profound interest in the paranormal.  And with that, I’ll tell you why I’m here doing what I do.

Now, I’m not going to go into the very early years and the dreams and imaginary friend but am skipping to my first true paranormal experience several years ago when I was a teenager.

My father had very recently died of a massive heart attack at the tender age of 42.  He had been a coal miner all of his adult life and died suddenly one night coming out of the mines.  It was so sudden and threw me and my mom into a tailspin (understatement).  Shortly after this, me, my mom and my fiance were relaxing and talking one evening and heard my dad on the back porch.  He often came home from work and stomped his mining boots off on the back porch before he entered.  This night you could here this and him scratching at the door like he was trying to get his key in the lock. This happened about every 15 minutes for an hour.  There was snow on and we repeatedly checked the steps and there was no disturbance in the snow.

I don’t believe this was residual as it only happened this one night. Our happy life was bumping along just fine and he died suddenly.  I feel that my father just didn’t realize he was physically dead yet.  He was never much of a believer in the paranormal and scoffed at a lot of what we, as researchers, accept as fact.  There were a couple more experiences involving my father, with me and my mother, but I said FIRST paranormal experience so I’ll stop here.  I have had many experiences in many different situations since and just cannot resist trying to learn as much as I can about what we are, at the present, calling paranormal.

Join me now in recalling what got you started in this fascinating field of study.  Understanding what brought us to this point may help us understand where we are going.  I realize some of you may not be comfortable telling your story but your comments are certainly welcome.

A Letter to the Otherside

Dear family, friends and foes,

I write this letter to those of you who have passed on to another plane of existence. I wish to express my gratitude and respect on behalf of the thousands of paranormal investigators and ghost hunters around the world. After many years of research, we still don’t really know why we can see and hear you sometimes and not at others.

I ask that you forgive our errors in learning about your existence. Whether you are earthbound or have moved on to the great beyond, please remember the limitations of physical existence. There are many of us here truly trying to understand and communicate with you. We are letting others know what we are finding out so that they don’t have to be afraid of you.

I want everyone here on the earth plane to remember and understand that you are human beings, have been and always will be. Our perceptions are limited again by physical laws and when you seemingly pop out of nowhere, we are startled. But if we were not afraid of you when you were in body, why should we be afraid of you now? I suppose if you were violent in body, you are probably not someone I want hanging out in my basement, attic, bedroom, etc.

But I know you wouldn’t be making the effort to communicate with us if you didn’t want us to understand that our soul or consciousness lives on after physical death. You wouldn’t communicate unless you wanted us to know what happened to you and to maybe help you with our, still as yet, limited resources.

I wish to apologize for those who try to provoke you into making your presence known by insulting you and invading your personal belongings. It is just that they want to capture evidence of your existence and since we have to deal with time issues, angering or upsetting you seems to work at times. It is not a good excuse but it is the only one we have.

I want to express my sadness for those of you who seem to remain stuck here on the earthly plane, unwilling or unable to move on. There is greater spiritual development waiting for you and you need not remain here, stuck in the past. Go home now and find your family and friends who passed before and after you. Find peace.

In closing, I again want to extend the utmost respect to you from all the investigators who are serious about finding out how it all works. Although we may appear to be nuts, (stumbling around in the dark, talking to the walls, etc.) to others and maybe even to you, we persevere in our quest for greater understanding.

If there is anything we can do or should be doing to make the communications easier, please try to let us know in the best way you can. I, for one, will continue my research and will be watching and listening closely for any sign of your presence.

Sincerely,

Diane M. Goff
